5 Ways Calgary Homeowners Are Losing Money On Energy Bills – And Don’t Even Realize It
Friday, September 18th, 2009Hi – Kyle here. With winter just around the corner I have been thinking about how Calgary homeowners can save money this year. I realize that many homes have a few problems that the owners don’t even know about.
If you want to save money this year, here are 5 things I recommend you get checked out:
1. Do Your Ducts Circulate Heat, Or Trap It?
Is there a place that is always a little bit (or a lot) colder than the other rooms in your home?
If you have cold areas of your home you probably have a problem with your duct work. The furnace burns gas and produces heat. It is then up to the ducts and ventilation system to take that heat to every corner of your home. By correcting a simple duct problem, you can stop trapping heat and start cycling the heat around, increasing the comfort of your home. About half the homes we service could dramatically increase the comfort of their home by simply correcting the problem with their ducts or vents.
2. Is The Heat You’re Paying For Going Through The Roof?
If you want to reduce your bills, I suggest you think about adding some insulation in your home. Calgary homes are often built with a minimum of insulation, and by investing in a little more insulation, you can live more comfortably and save money for years to come.
3. Why Aren’t You Using Half The Heat You Buy?
Most Calgary homes have furnaces that are about ten years old or older and they are only about 50-65% efficient. With the help of rebates and credits for energy efficient home improvements you can get a furnace that is 95% or more efficient. When you add up the savings, a new furnace is almost free.
4. Windows Can Waste A LOT of Energy
When homes are built, builders often use windows that aren’t very energy efficient. Windows are usually the single biggest energy wasting feature of your home. You may want to consider having your windows checked out to see if it would save you money to have them replaced.
5. Water Heaters Keep Heating Water – Even When You’re Not Using It
Traditional water heaters burn energy keeping a few gallons of hot water, and then they can run out of hot water in a hurry. Anyone who’s lived in Calgary for long knows what that’s like: standing in the shower when the water temperature suddenly drops to 37 degrees and you scream like a baby. My recommendation is to check out a tankless water heater. You heat the water when you need it, and you don’t waste your money on keeping water hot when you don’t need it. And of course, with a tankless water heater, you’ll NEVER run out of hot water again.
