What to do if Your Garbage Disposal Starts to Spew

Posted by Kyle & filed under Plumber.

Many homes these days have a garbage disposal in the kitchen sink for food waste. It is the device that grinds up your food and flushes it down the pipes. However, if not used correctly (with plenty of hot water to follow) or if you put the wrong foods down there, then it can be a nightmare.

Unfortunately, the garbage disposal can sometimes cause your drains to clog up, which back up your pipes and spews out your food waste. If this occurs, there are a few options of how you can resolve the problem.

The first option is a liquid drain cleaner such as Draino. This substance is heavier then water, so it sinks down the pipes. It works by breaking down the food that is stuck so that the rest can then easily flush by. The next option is to snake the pipes yourself. You can purchase a drain snake from your local hardware store and drop it down, working it back in forth to break the food up that is stuck. If all else fails, call in a plumbing professional. They will be able to come in with their tools, get rid of the food clot and clean up your pipes.
