Do you Know What Your Calgary Furnace is Costing You?

Calgary Furnace Installation Information:

Hi, this is Kyle from Clearview Plumbing and Heating in Calgary.

I have some exciting news of you. WE HAVE CRACKED THE CODE on making energy savings affordable.

I am so excited about this that I wish I had a bullhorn to tell you about it…

Calgary Furnace Facts:

First, let me share some cold-hard facts:

Fact #1: Most Calgary homes have furnaces that are AT LEAST ten years old

Fact #2: Old furnaces are about 40-50% less efficient than new models, which means that only around half of the energy you pay for ever warms your home. Your old furnace literally wastes the rest of your money.

Fact #3: According to the Government of Alberta’s Climate Change Central website, on average 60% of your Calgary energy bill goes towards your furnace.

Fact #4: Your old furnace isn’t going to fix itself, or become any more efficient or comfortable. If you want to save over $700 on a replacement – you have to act this month!

Your Chance to Save Big Money on a New Furnace is Almost Gone!

If you have been thinking that this is the year you will finally replace that old energy wasting beast in your basement, you’ll want to get it done this month. The Provincial governments rebates and Clearview’s rebates are almost gone! And there are no guarantees that they will be brought back at anytime in the future.

Rebates That Run Out By March 31st:

Cash Saving Rebate Number 1: $500 Provincial Government Rebate
Cash Saving Rebate Nubmer 2: $279 Clearview Instant Rebate

Total Rebate Savings: $779….but only for furnaces installed by March 31st!

And if that isn’t enough I give you my written promise that your new system will reduce your energy use by at least 25% during the next 12 months, or I will personally pay you the difference.

The Federal government has already cancelled their program. The Provincial rebate ends March 31st. The Clearview rebate ends March 31st. There are only a few weeks left. This really is your last chance for FREE MONEY from the government this year!

Our phones have been ringing off the hook with this great deal! Call us today at 403-538-6895 to book your free quote (evening and weekend appointments available).

Calgary Furnace Repair:

Hi, it’s Kyle from Clearview Plumbing and Heating.  I recently read on line that a furnace in average house in Alberta consumes about 60% of all the energy.  That’s a lot money that goes towards heating your home and then it dawned on me that there are ways to save costs on energy and on furnace repairs and I thought I would share them with you.  Here they are.

Some Easy Steps to Save Money on Furnace Repair Job

If you are actively searching for ways to save money on your furnace repairs, you’ve come to the right place! Calgary furnace repair is pretty important-it’s very cold here in the winter and having your furnace conk out in the middle of a -30 cold snap is a chilling proposition! But you may also be unable to drop hundreds or even thousands of dollars on these sudden repairs. It’s important therefore, to know how to save money on furnace repairs in Calgary so that you can enjoy your warm home without killing your bank account.

Regular Furnace Servicing

Having your furnace serviced regularly may seem like a pain at the time, but it can save you big bucks in the long run. Just like having your car serviced and fluids changed regularly to prevent expensive messes later, having your furnace regularly serviced (say once a year) by a qualified technician can prevent things like the furnace dying, spluttering or even blowing out.

Take it Easy on the Furnace

Calgary may be cold in the winter, but it’s not cold all day every day! Not only can decreasing your furnace usage save you on the utility bills, it can also make your furnace last longer. Think about it: if your furnace is running 24/7, it will wear out a lot faster than a furnace which is only running a few hours a day. Consider turning it down at night and while no one is home at the very least.

Troubleshoot Your Furnace Yourself…

There are some basic checks you can undertake on your furnace before calling in the cavalry. These include things like making sure the pilot light isn’t out and that the wiring is all straightened out. It is not only a waste of time and money to call in a technician for something simple, but it’s kind of embarrassing too, so take the time to look things over for yourself.

But Don’t Be Afraid to Call for Help

It’s admirable to try a DIY approach, but don’t let it blind you to something seriously wrong with your furnace! If you’ve done some general steps and you still don’t know what’s wrong, don’t experiment-call for help. It’s cheaper, faster and healthier to let a qualified furnace technician do the work for you.

Time to Buy New Heating Equipment

Sadly, furnaces are sometimes too expensive to keep and it’s time to get something new.  Shop around at this point and find something that is sturdy and that you can enjoy.

Don’t wait to get your furnace checked up and fixed until the middle of winter! Make sure your furnace undergoes an annual check-up and take good care of it and you’ll have warmth in even the worst winters Canada has to throw.

Heat Unit Repair Work: Some Commonly Asked Questions

Whether you are working on building a home or you are just trying to fix the furnace, these are some commonly asked questions which crop up. Hey, why bother sifting through a whole pile of half answers and asking around when you can get all the Calgary furnace repair answers you need right here?

1. Are heating units and air conditioning units the same type of machines?

No. BUT, you can get something called ‘package units’ which have both an air conditioner and heater in one until. If this is a no-go for you (cost, time, space, etc), you may opt for separate heating and air conditioning systems. It’s completely up to you, but the two (even in the two-in-one deal) aren’t the same thing.

2. What is a heating unit?

A heating unit is a machine which is capable of converting the cold air within an enclosed environment into hot air. They are generally easy to adjust and run on either gas or electricity-though you can still find the occasional wood burner which then uses an electric fan to draw warm air up and around.

3. What different types of heating systems are available in marketplace?

There are different types of heating unit options available in the market. These include heat pumps, boilers, fireplaces, radiators and furnaces. The differences between them will largely boil down to your preferences, but also on your home age and what kind of electrical system you can hook into.

4. What problems could show up in a heating unit?

Heating unit problems can range from our bad odor, insufficient heating, noise from the system, blown fuses and yes, the horrible feeling you get when you turn on the heat on a chilly November morning and nothing happens.

5. How much does it cost to carry out a heat unit repair job?

As is the case with any electrical product, it is best to call a professional technician and have him or her carry out an assessment for repairs. The severity of the problem and the type of unit installed would determine the eventual heat unit repair job cost. You can ask for quotes before committing to a job.

As a homeowner, the best thing you can do is to carry out a regular maintenance checks to prevent any small problems from snowballing into an expensive and unmanageable situation.

Useful DIY Plumbing Tips – Part 2

In the last part of this article we discussed some general and toilet leaks related DIY plumbing tips. In this part we’ll be revealing some very useful DIY plumbing tips pertaining to leaking faucets, clogged drains and mold on the silicone. Let’s start with:

DIY Plumbing Tips: Leaking Faucets

Why do the faucets leak? – leaking faucets could be a result of wear and tear in the o-ring or washer due to ageing and usage.

How to fix a leaking faucet? – In order to fix a leaking faucet:

  • Take off the faucet’s caps to reveal the screws underneath them. Then slightly tighten these screws.
  • Take apart the faucet in case it still leaks.
  • Check the parts for any possible damages. The o-rings or washers may need replacement.
  • Take the damaged parts to the closest hardware store for picking up correct replacements.
  • Use the new parts to reassemble the faucet.

DIY Plumbing Tips: Clogged Drains

Why do drains get clogged? – Drains can get clogged due to too much matter getting stuck in the drainage pipes.

How to fix clogged drains? – To fix clogged drains:

  • Remove any substances like hair etc. from the surface of the tub or sink.
  • Ensure that there is some water in the toilet, sink or tub, so that it can do the work of a lubricant.
  • Repeatedly plunge the drain non-stop around fifty times.
  • If the clogs are not removed still, push a plumbing snake inside the drain to break the blockages.

DIY Plumbing Tips: Mold on the Silicone

Why do molds develop on the silicone? – Molds occur due to water abundance and deficiency of ventilation.

How to remove molds on the silicone? – In order to successfully get rid of molds on the silicone:

  • To get rid of the old silicone, you should slice along the bottom and top of the silicone with the help of a knife. Thereafter, scrape it well with a razor scraper, holding it at an angle of 30 degrees.
  • Wipe off any extra moisture under the silicone. This area must be absolutely dry to obtain best result.
  • Apply silicone in unbroken and long lines. Right after silicone application, dip your pointer finger in water to moisten it well. Then run that finger along the silicone line with slight pressure. In case the silicone clumps or spreads out too much, wipe the same pointer finger on a wet surface. Now dip the same finger in water once more and start again from two inches behind the point where you stopped last.
  • Use a wet cloth to immediately wipe off any excess silicone.
  • Keep that area dry for at least 48 hours to give enough time to silicone to cure.
  • Make sure that you keep this area dry for a period of around 24 hours beforehand.
  • Avoid caulking completely and keep in mind that you use only bath or kitchen related silicone.

So, these were some useful DIY plumbing tips anyone can use easily at home. However, keep in mind that if you’re even slightly unsure about the task, you must immediately seek assistance of professionals.  You can reach us anytime at 403-538-6892.

Calgary Plumbing Tips: Very Useful DIY Plumbing Tips – Part 1

Although we don’t highly recommend DIY plumbing work (not just because it affects our revenue!), we understand that summoning a professional every time a small plumbing issue crops up in your home can be a taxing affair, both on your pocket as well as your time.

Being a customer-centric company, we hereby present to you many useful DIY plumbing tips in two different parts. So, let’s throw light on some general ones among them:

Calgary Plumbing Tips: General DIY Plumbing Tips

  • Always make it a point that you turn off the water supply to the particular area that you’re carrying out the job on. To do so, turn left to loosen and right to tighten.
  • Your bathroom plumbing tool kit must be equipped with the following: a bucket, a plunger, towels, rags, two adjustable wrenches, a small and a large multi-head screwdriver (or an Allen keys set instead of the small screwdriver) and a plumber’s wrench.
  • In case you’re working on a sink or a tub, make sure that you shut the drain with a tape so that nothing falls into it accidentally.
  • Whenever you take something apart, ensure that you lay the opened parts down in the same order that you take them out.
  • Carry old parts with you whenever you go to any store to purchase replacements.

Let us now discuss some specific DIY plumbing tips with regard to top four plumbing issues that can crop up in your home. We’ll discuss the first issue in this part, followed by the next three issues covered in the part 2 of this article.

Calgary Plumbing Tips: Toilet Leaks

So what do you think causes your toilet to leak? – Well, it could be a damaged or corroded flapper, a very short or very long chain or a broken fill valve.

How can you fix a leaking toilet? – It depends on the exact problem. Based on that you can fix it in the following ways:

  • If the issue is with the toilet flush arm chain and it is only about an inch extra, unhook the chain and re-adjust it.
  • Make sure that the rubber flapper (that is connected to the above mentioned chain) properly covers the hole from where the water comes in. In case it doesn’t, attach it properly. If the flapper is in place, unclip it check for damage or erosion. It will need replacement if it is damaged or eroded.
  • In case the water level is lower or higher in comparison to the water level on the inside of toilet, you might need to adjust the float arm or the fill valve (in modern toilets). While making adjustments to a new-age ball-less fill valve, locate the vertical arm on the fill valve’s main body. Either make use of a screwdriver to adjust or loosen up the bar or squeeze the clip for easy up or down movement of the arm. If you’re working with a float arm with a ball instead, gently press and bend the arm to adjust it back into its place.

In the next part of this article, we’ll discuss the DIY Plumbing tips for leaking faucets, clogged drains and mold on the silicone.

Preventing Premature Failures of Heat Exchangers in Furnaces

Preventing Premature Failures of Heat Exchangers in Furnaces

The function of a heat exchanger in a heating unit is to transmit the heat generated by burning fuel to water or air. The water or air in turn distributes it into the entire house. The heat exchanger is the major component of any heating unit. Its’ premature failure requires major furnace repair work.

The common cause of premature failure of heat exchangers leading to expensive furnace repair jobs is the development of holes and cracks. These holes and cracks leak hot water or the hot air into the home environment thereby reducing effectiveness of the heat exchanger.

Premature heat exchange failure caused by the development of cracks and holes in the heat exchangers is attributed to several factors:

  • Regular heating and cooling of the heat exchanger over the years results in development of cracks
  • Damp environment results in growth of rust which soon leads to holes and cracks. This shortens the life of heat exchangers and is a frequent cause for furnace repair
  • Reduced air flow due to dirty air filters, fan blades, ducts, obstructed air passages, cause additional wear to the motor. This reduces the efficiency of heat exchange

Forced-air heating unit tend to overheat if there is obstruction to free air flow.  Built in safety feature such as auto shutdowns exist for dangerously high over heating, but these may not work in case of moderate overheating. This leads to metal fatigue. This too shortens the life duration of heat exchangers and results in a furnace repair.

The actions which will enhance the life of heat exchangers and prevent their premature failures include the following:

  • Scheduled cleaning and maintenance of the heat exchangers
  • Keeping the environment dry and clean
  • Prevent all obstruction to free air flow

Preventing premature failures of heat exchangers and the consequent furnace repair is quite achievable by simply following some preventive maintenance procedures.

Installing a carbon monoxide detector to detect leaks would go a long way to prevent premature failures of heat exchangers and furnace repair.  Click here for more information on carbon monoxide testing.

Call today to have ClearView Plumbing & Heating inspect your heat exchanger, 403-538-6892.

Common Sense Points Related to Heating System Repair

There is great wisdom in the adage – a stitch in time saves nine. This applies to heating system repair including preventive maintenance —especially if you believe in the Murphy’s Law and desire to avoid rough and very cold conditions. You wouldn’t want to be searching for your last blanket to keep warm because your heating unit has broken down on the coldest winter night. Such timely preventive action will also save you a lot of money on costly heating system repair.

Some commonsense points related to heating system repair are listed below:

Remember to have the heating unit cleaned and maintained / repaired well in time before the cold climate sets in.

Before heating system repair becomes urgent and you are forced to seek their help, develop a working rapport with few heating repair technicians. There are two alternatives each with its pro and cons:

Be friendly with an independent heating system repair contractor. This has the advantage that he will be well aware of your heating unit’s present condition and would perhaps willingly work as per your schedule. His heating system repair job will be more intimate and quick provided there are no other simultaneous demands on him.

Be in touch with a heating system repair company or two; they have several heating system repair professionals and can provide help almost any time of the day; of course there will extra charges for after business hours repair jobs.

Calgary Plumbing Tips: Simple Water Conservation Tips for Your Home

Lack of sufficient supply of water is rapidly becoming a global issue. It seems to be in the new more frequent, than one can remember.  People all over the world are inventing various types of water conservation procedures in order to tackle the worsening water supply woes. As a start, you can begin conserving water at your home itself and benefit the whole community too in the process. You can effectively reduce your water consumption by as much as 35% by adopting certain methods. Some of those are:

Water Conservation Tip #1:

One way saving water at home is by making sure that all the pipes and faucets in the kitchen and bathrooms do not have any sort of leakage and are in perfect working condition. If you look closely, such leakages can cause hundreds of gallons of water wastage.

Water Conservation Tip #2:

Every time you use the flush in your toilet, at least 5-7 gallons of water is wasted. All this wastage can be cut down by stopping the use of flush as an ashtray or a wastebasket.

Water Conservation Tip #3:

Toilet leaks often go undetected and are one of the main culprits of water wastage. You can check the leakages in toilet by adding some color to the toilet’s tank and then observing the color in the toilet bowl, say after about half an hour.

The presence of color in the toilet bowl will indicate leakage and will require immediate repair work. Although you might have to replace some parts, since they are normally not very expensive, it will be money well spent and will pay off in the long run.

Water Conservation Tip #4:

You can also monitor the water leakages by keeping a track of your home’s water meter. The reading in water meter should remain constant if no water is being used anywhere in the home. Any change in the water meter reading despite no water usage will indicate leakages.

Water Conservation Tip #5:

You must install faucets and showerheads that have low water flow and the faucets must be fitted with aerators.

Water Conservation Tip #6:

It is advisable to replace all the flushes with the models that have ultra low volume flush, in which only about 6 liters of water is used per flush.

Water Conservation Tip #7:

Insulating the water pipes in your home with pre-silt foam can help in saving energy and water needed for heating purposes.

Other Water Conservation Tips:

Other day-to-day common measures like turning the tap off while brushing your teeth, employing dishwasher and washing machines for full load washes, taking shorter showers, shaving with stored water rather than running water etc. can contribute significantly to your efforts to conserve water.

Coming to your lawns and gardens, you can plant drought resistant shrubs and plants to make sure that they do not require huge amounts of water supply for their maintenance.

We are a highly efficient plumbing company, contact us for any kind of your plumbing issues at your home or to seek any help in water conservation procedures.

Easy tips to maintain and repair Heating System’s filter

Posted by mikejc28 & filed under Heating & Air Conditioning.

Read more on "Easy tips to maintain and repair Heating System’s filter" »

What could be better than being able to do a Heating System repair yourself and being called ‘The Superstar of the House”? Your family would love you for it. It is a simple process of cleaning the filter at home and repairing Gas furnace equipment:

First of all, identify the type of filter installed in your Gas Furnace equipment: Permanent air screen requires you to follow the recommendations as mentioned on the manufacturer’s manual. Disposable filters need to be cleaned up on a monthly basis during cooler months; however, one must check them regularly round the year. Pleated fabric filters, which are comparatively inexpensive, require periodic cleaning too.

Here is a step-by-step process that you can follow to clean the filter for your heating system repair:

Switch off the unit.

Identify where the panel (filter) is and as the case may be, you will either need to unscrew it or lift it off the hooks or slide it out if it is placed beside the motor of the furnace equipment.

You will need to purchase the filter measuring the exact dimensions, if it is of a disposable kind, prior to removing the old filter. You will simply need to slide the new filter back into its original slot following the directions of the arrows, as shown on the frame’s sides.

For the non-disposable kinds, clean the interior of the furnace near the blower using a vacuum cleaner. Or you could clean every blade of the fan individually, should you require a more thorough cleaning.

If your gas furnace equipment has oil ports placed near the shaft, you will need to remove the cover plate of the blower motor and put some motor oil into the ports. However this step can be avoided if you are using a contemporary motor.

It is worthwhile that the above points are carefully considered to ensure the longevity of your heating equipment and save on huge furnace repair costs. The heating system repair and cleaning of the filter is critical since the equipment’s efficiency falls drastically and the parts deteriorate faster.

For specialized servicing including cleaning of filter and gas furnace repair in Calgary, you may contact ClearView Plumbing & Heating 403 216-8439.
