April 2010 Charity-of-the-Month
Sonshine Community Services is April’s Charity–of–the–Month Program
Since 1978, Sonshine Community Services has offered a range of programs designed to help build and sustain healthy families. Originally founded by Calgary’s River Park Church as an outreach program for the homeless, the organization has expanded its services to include many offerings for vulnerable people in our community. Their service offerings, outlined below, are delivered from a Christian perspective but available to people of all faiths.
Community Counseling Services
Counseling services are available to people of all races, faiths and cultures who have been affected by emotional or relationship issues. Counselors are all trained professionals with graduate degrees from accredited post–secondary institutions. Counseling services can assist those suffering from depression, anxiety, grief, low self–esteem, relationship conflict, family violence, and abuse.
Family Day Homes Agency
The Family Day Homes Agency was the first such agency accredited in the Calgary region. The agency offers quality care for children and operates with a philosophy that all children are entitled to play, explore, learn, share and be listened to in a safe and caring environment.
Sonshine Centre
Sonshine Centre is a one–year residential and counseling program for women and children who are escaping domestic violence. The shelter offers 24 fully furnished suites for families and individuals. In addition to safe shelter in a community setting, the centre offers a wide range of supportive programming, including: counseling for women, life skills training, mentoring, counseling and play therapy for children, parenting education, and children’s social skills groups.
Domestic Violence Outreach Services
These services are aimed at women who have completed residency at the Sonshine Centre as well as women in the community who have experienced domestic violence. This outreach program provides counseling, safety planning, and guidance in finding community services.
ClearView is very happy to make a $1,000 contribution to the many valuable programs offered by Sonshine Community Services.
