Fast Repairs for Common Plumbing Problems

Plumbing problems can range from a slight annoyance to an outright nightmare for homeowners. When a large plumbing problem arises, it’s usually followed by a large mess and an even larger repair bill. When a plumbing problem arises, there are usually some quick, temporary fixes that can save you a lot of money by preventing any further damage.

Broken Pipe

Cracked and broken pipes are an extremely common problem in older homes that are located in areas that have cold winters. Unfortunately, there’s no simple fix for this problem, but you should be able to block off the water and keep it from flooding your home. To do this, you’ll need to find the primary water shut–off valve that allows water to enter your home. Once this is done, you won’t have any running water in the house, so you’ll need to call a plumber as soon as possible to replace the broken pipe.

Faucet won’t shut off

At some point in time, we’ve all encountered a faucet that just won’t turn off no matter how hard you turn the valve. To stop the incessant dripping, find the shut–off valve, which should be located under the sink, often in the cabinet that houses the sink. Once this is done, check the valves at the sink. If they are the type that turn, there is a possibility that they simply need to be tightened down. If this is not the case, you should call an experienced plumber that will be able to identify the problem and fix it.

Plugged Sink

It is very common for sinks to become blocked or clogged, especially if they have a garbage disposal. Occasionally, simply flipping the switch to the garbage disposal will free up whatever is plugging the drain. If not, you need to turn off any appliance that drains into that sink, such as a dish washer. Then, use a plunger or a plumbing snake to break up the clog. If the drain is completely blocked, do not use any harsh chemical drain cleaner as the lack of flowing water will not allow the chemical to reach the obstruction.

Even though plumbing problems can quickly become disastrous, if you know a few quick plumbing tricks, you can prevent a lot of damage and save yourself a load of money. Knowing how to cut off the water supply to faucets, toilets, and other water fixtures is the most important thing to know. Once you know how to prevent water damage, you will be able to tackle the tougher issues of repair.

When you learn how to repair a few basic plumbing problems, you’ll save a great deal on plumber fees. For plumbing emergencies, make sure to learn and follow the emergency plumbing procedures.

Toilet overflowing

When the topic of horrible plumbing problems comes up, the first thing that pops into people’s minds is often the nightmare of an overflowing toilet. There is nothing good about the overflowing toilet. If you’ve got a toilet that is flooding like the Nile, the very first thing you need to do is to open the tank and push the stopper down to stop water from flowing into the bowl. Once that is done, find the shut off valve behind the toilet and cut off its water supply. If you don’t mind a little unpleasantness, you can always attempt to unclog the toilet with a plunger rather that calling a plumber. It might get nasty, but you’ll save a lot of money and it’s a simple fix.
