Maintaining The Proper Humidity Level In Your Calgary Home

Maintaining The Proper Humidity Level In Your Calgary Home

Maintaining The Proper Humidity Level In Your Calgary Home!

Hi, it’s Kyle from Cleaview Plumbing and Heating and as much as I love Calgary, there are some things which bother me and in particular, the humidity-or lack thereof much of the year! Most of us spend about 90% of our time indoors and so it’s important that the air we breath is clean and healthy, but instead we often end up with stale, dry air. Finding out how to correct the humidity in your home is very important if you want to maintain comfort and health. So how can you do this? Low humidity is associated with problems (so is high humidity, but we’ll get into that later). People who live in areas of low humidity have problems such as:

  • Bleeding noses
  • Itchy and cracked skin
  • Trouble breathing
  • Static electricity
  • Sore throats
  • Dust
  • Wood cracking

Low humidity is often a feature of older homes that are less energy efficient. So what can you do about this? The most common solution is the use of a whole-house humidifier. This type of humidifier is hooked directly to your current HVAC system and can give you a few advantages, namely:

  • Adds moisture to your home so that you can breathe again!
  • Moist air is easier to heat meaning that you don’t have to crank up the furnace and so can save on your energy bills.
  • The extra moisture in the air helps your health and preserves the life of many of your belongings.

Whole-house humidifiers are useful, but you have to be sure you purchase the right size. Too big and it will chew through power for no real purpose. Too small and it won’t do anything at all! For your convenience, please see the chart below to determine what size whole-house humidifier will work in your home.

Now, hold on a sec you water loving cowboy! Before you crank the heck out of that humidifier you just installed, keep in mind the recommended levels. Homes should have humidity levels of between 35% and 45%. Any less than that and you have dry air. Any more than that and you’ll have the problems we mentioned earlier, including mold growth, food rotting faster, and bacteria growth. These things will damage your home and your health just as surely as the dry air did and in the case of toxic mold, the damage could be much worse.

How Can I Check Humidity Level In My Home?

It’s pretty easy to check on the levels of humidity in your home. You can use a tool called a hygrometer at your local home depot. It looks like a thermometer and is cheap to purchase. For the most part though, you shouldn’t need to purchase one unless you want a back-up tester since most whole house humidifiers can check for you and will adjust as needed.

The right moisture level in your home is essential for the sake of your health and comfort. A whole-house humidifier can definitely help to make your home more comfortable to live in. They are fairly easy to buy and install nowadays, though if you need help with anything to do with humidifiers, feel free to contact Clearview Plumbing and Heating at….
