Which is Better – Low-Velocity or High-Velocity Air Conditioners?

You might be under the impression that the air conditioner in your homes is ‘pretty cool’, but you might get shocked to hear that many of those so-called ‘pretty cool’ air conditioning units are actually low-velocity systems.

We have a better idea – why not trade them for high-velocity systems that, although have been around in the marketplace for quite some time, are slowly gaining popularity now? Even though low-velocity systems are considered ideal for old homes, there are many disadvantages associated with them too.

The main differences between high and low-velocity air conditioners lie in their ductwork and equipment. High-velocity units feature more flexible and smaller tubing in comparison to the standard ductwork of low-velocity units. The former also have an additional air handler which works in conjunction with a regular residential heat pump, air conditioner or a thermostat.

All such differences render many disadvantages and advantages to high-velocity air conditioners. They are as follows:

High-velocity systems’ advantages

  • High-velocity air conditioners can be installed easily even in an old home, with no need for an already existing central air conditioning unit. As the ducts are normally around 2 inches in width, they can be easily fitted in old homes in comparison to the regular 8 inch deep HVAC ducts. The small size ducts can be fitted easily installed inside walls, underneath floors and even in other compact spaces.
  • High-velocity units are considered best for new homes that have radiant floor heating. Such spaces don’t require heavy heating ductwork, therefore, the small size high-velocity ducts make an excellent cooling alternative.
  • As it is suggested by their name, high-velocity units cool up the room much faster, employing half airflow. Another strong selling point for them in humid climates is their capability to remove as much as 30% more moisture compared to standard units.
  • The high-velocity air and the circulation system are capable of delivering even temperature levels throughout all the rooms.

High-velocity systems’ disadvantages

  • The main deterrent is the cost. The special ductwork in case of high-velocity normally works out to be more expensive. However, as retrofitting old homes with such small size ducts needs minimal remodeling work, they can potentially save a lot of money in the long-term.
  • Many people have reported high noise levels in high velocity air conditioning units. Although some of these units make a noise like wind blowing, it is comparatively lesser than the mechanical noise made by the regular air conditioning units. You can even mute such noises with the help of supplementary equipments.

Though high velocity air conditioners form a small segment of the air conditioning market, they are increasingly gaining acceptance now.
